The Stress Test

In the last year, stress has become a top concern for businesses, employees, and job seekers worldwide. In the U.S., 75% of people say they’re stressed out, according to a survey released by the American Psychological Association. And a national health survey in Canada revealed stress levels were up by 30% in 2010.

Stress not only impacts productivity and concentration, but it’s also linked to health- related issues like heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S. today. February is American Heart Month and we want to know if all this stress is having an effect on your life.

Stress can take hold if you allow it to. Good food choices, sleep, slowing down, deep breathing….and shooting real pain-in-the-tush people with marshmallows is helpful!

Being a professional in the non-profit world, in THIS economy has been extremely stressful. The demand for services has been greater than ever. But, I have lost a colleague due to stress and she was only in her 40’s. The take away from all of this is to remember that as long as you are doing your BEST, stressing brings out your worst. Take care of self and those that work for you. In the end, I would rather be remembered for my accomplishments rather than the colleague that stressed herself out!

While stress and its effects may seem minor to some people, it plays a gigantic role in the home environment. The people most affected by stress are childern and spouses. Over the last 5 years i have had to deal with the stress of school, and of my parents. I have also noticed that the more stressful their day, the more likely that they will start argueing and deal out strict punushments for increasingly minor things. So, i would like for people to realize that stress from the work-place will affect other people in your lives, and with this knowledge i hope that people will put forth a little effort into preventing stress in co-workers.

Sometimes life can through a lot of stressful balls at you; it seems that everything happens all at the same time, however, there are solutions if we look outside of the immediate situation and the bigger picture. For example, there is a person who thought counsel would represent him when his counsel was prejudicially biased toward the opposing representative side who had more money, I knew that eventually counsel would quit and this would be an opportunity to review his ethical behavior for “impeding” the judical process. He may be sanctioned, suspended or even revokation of counsel’s license. It just takes time and truth and credibility on my part. I am not going to let this stress overwhelm me, just one piece of review at a time. ss.

Stress in the form of abuse, in the workplace brought on a debilitating depression, which, at the near end of working life, has left helplessness and haplessness. How to recover personal self-respect is primary job, in finding healing and hope for a meaningful future.

Stress is not always devastating. Can also be the trigger for creativity, correction, and the ever present companion even when things are happy – but changing – like weddings, births, new jobs, etc.
