New Trends in Business: QR Codes

QR-CodeFirst commercially used on a pack of Wrigley’s gum in 1974, the UPC barcode has enjoyed a long run as the standard auto ID data capture (AIDC) device. Found everywhere from supermarkets to hospitals, it’s nearly impossible to go a day without seeing one. However, there is a new contender that is slowly gaining popularity in the U.S.

The quick reference code, or QR code, is already widely used in Japan. It was originally created by Denso-Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, as a way to quickly track auto parts during the manufacturing process. However, QR codes are now being adapted for much broader, consumer-focused uses.

If you’re not familiar with QR codes, it’s likely you’ve already seen one without realizing it. QR codes are typically one to two inch squares made up of a series of black and white patterns and can contain a wide variety of information such as text, URLs, contact information, and images. All you need to read a QR code is a smartphone with a camera and a reader application, which can usually be downloaded free of charge.

There is a lot of buzz surrounding QR codes right now because the unique communication opportunities they provide. Best Buy, for example, became one of the first major U.S. retailers to incorporate QR codes in the information tags for various products throughout their stores. When scanned with a smartphone, the consumer is able to access information such as technology specifications and average customer ratings for the particular product.

QR codes also show promise as a powerful marketing tool and as a method to make print publications, such as magazines and newspapers, more interactive. At this point, the possibilities are nearly endless as businesses and consumers alike continue to realize their potential. It’s an interesting technology, but only time will tell if they will be more than a passing fad. So, don’t assume quite yet that the standard UPC barcode is destined to go the way of the dinosaur or VHS.

I have considered incorporating QR codes in my business for special promotions. I’m working on it and hope to launch my first special promotion by July 1.
