5 Things to Do This Month

PRD11RL_5THINGS_FSpring is winding down and summer will soon be upon us. From Father’s Day to summer vacations, here’s a list of important things to remember in the month of June.

June is National Safety Month
Each June, the National Safety Council (NSC) promotes National Safety Month. Throughout the month, the NSC encourages people, businesses, and organizations to get involved by focusing on different key safety issues each week, including preventing overexertion, slips, trips, and falls. Take some time this month to re-evaluate your company’s safety policies and procedures. Not only will you be taking a step to keep your workforce healthy, but it will also help create safe habits that could have an impact on your workers’ compensation rates. Father’s Day, June 19
While references to a “father’s day” can be traced back as far as Babylonian times, the first recorded observance in the U.S. took place on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. However, Father’s Day wasn’t officially made a permanent national holiday until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. Now, the third Sunday in June is reserved each year to celebrate fatherhood and the roles dads play in the lives of people everywhere.

First Day of Summer, June 21
At 17:16 on June 21 the Earth’s axial tilt will reach its maximum of 23º 26’ where it is most inclined toward the sun. In other words, it’s the first day of summer. And with summer comes summer vacations. One of the busiest travel seasons of the year, your employee’s children are now out of school and family trips are being planned. It’s a good idea to stress the importance of communicating about vacation time with your workforce, so you can take preemptive steps to ensure your business will not be affected by employees taking time off.

Plan an Office Picnic
In addition to vacations, summer is also the perfect time to have a company picnic. It’s a great way to give employee morale a boost and can be as simple or extravagant as you want it to be. Whether you rent out a venue and have food catered or just meet up at a local park to grill burgers and hotdogs, your employees will appreciate the time away from the office and the opportunity to get to know their co-workers and their families.

Prepare for Halftime
The end of June marks the end of the second quarter and the “halftime” of 2011. Start thinking about the goals you set at the beginning of the year and where you are on the path to meeting them. Start planning some time to sit down with your team to analyze the first half of the year. Discuss what you did right and what needs improvement. Then, based on these discussions, develop an action plan for what steps need to be taken to ensure you stay on track to meet your goals in the second half of the year.
