5 Things to Do This Month: March 2012

With spring just around the corner, now is a great time to take steps to refresh and renew your team as the year gets into full swing. Check out these five things to do in March that will help your employees be happier and more productive!

Celebrate Employee Appreciation Day
The first Friday in March is dedicated to recognizing and honoring employees everywhere. This is a great opportunity for your business to spotlight your workers and identify all the ways they positively impact your company. Plan fun surprises for them throughout the day, like meeting them at the door in the morning with coffee and donuts, giving away prizes at different points in the day, or providing free car washes from management.

Spring Forward
As you prepare to turn your clocks forward on March 11, also consider how you can increase your team’s overall knowledge in the spring months. With meetings, projects, and deadlines, it’s hard to find the time to slow down and focus on broadening your knowledge. But, taking in new information is what fuels innovative thinking and generates new ideas. Try asking everyone to devote one hour a week to learning something new – you’d be surprised at how much it will help your team.

Focus on Team Building
March Madness is all about teamwork, and it’s just as important for your employees to work as a team as it is for basketball players to play as a team. Incorporate team-building activities into regularly-scheduled meetings, or even set aside an afternoon to focus on strengthening your ties. Match the activities to your team’s style, but also make sure that everyone will be outside their comfort zone a little. It’s hard to grow if you’re always comfortable!

Start Thinking About Vacations
With many employees likely planning spring break trips, make sure you communicate with your team about your policies on requesting and taking vacations. With studies continually showing the positive effects vacations have on workplace productivity and morale, you want to make the process of taking time off as stress free as possible. Communicating expectations early on will minimize any misunderstanding later on down the road, and hopefully remind you to schedule some time off for yourself too!

Think Green
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, find a few ways to make your business more environmentally friendly. There are lots of ways to make your office greener, from allowing your employees to work from home one day a week to replacing all your coffee cups with coffee mugs. And, the great thing about taking these small steps is that they’ll also save you money in the long run.
