How Do You Find The Perfect Employee?

The foundation of any company starts with its employees. Since finding the right person for the job is no simple task, how do you go about finding employees that fit in with your company culture? While there’s no guarantee on how to attract them, there are a few things you could do to improve your chances of finding the right employee.

Who is Your Perfect Employee?
The ideal employee differs from company to company and department to department. Before you begin your hunt for new staff members, ask yourself what characteristics you’re looking for in an employee for the specific position you aim to fill. There are many types of jobs out there that require different types of personalities and skill sets.

Let’s imagine you’ve just finished interviewing someone who seems like a great fit for the position. While they may have the experience necessary to complete the tasks assigned to them, do you see them sticking around six months, or even one year from now? It’s important to ask yourself these questions, because the more time you spend switching from employee to employee, the more you’re draining your company’s resources.

Say you’re hiring for a book-keeping position and your interviewee was sharp, bubbly, enthusiastic, and had excellent speaking skills. If you had a position in sales available, you might consider placing them there. However, if you were to hire this individual for the book-keeping job, rest assured that they will move on to something better if and when the opportunity presents itself.

So, rather than making the same mistake over and over again, here are some tips to help increase your chances at finding the right employee.

Job Descriptions
Attracting the perfect employee starts with the perfect job description. Make sure it’s well written and thoughtful. This will hopefully weed out those who don’t have the necessary skill sets and experience needed for the job.

Interviews
Interviews are one of the most important steps in the hiring process, so make sure you’re making the most out of them. If you feel the need to bring the interviewee in for a second interview, by all means go ahead and do that. This offers you a chance to get to know their personalities while you ask them in-depth questions which test their knowledge, enthusiasm, skills, and experience.

What Do You Offer?
Finding the perfect employee goes hand-in-hand with an attractive offer. Whether this includes an excellent pay package, flexible work hours, or a great company culture, you want to stick out as a unique employer who cares about the well-being of your employees.

Trust Yourself
As mentioned before, finding the ideal person for the job is vital. Keep in mind that you’re not looking to hire a new friend, but rather someone who will fit into the current work environment and is capable of fulfilling the requirements associated with the position.

Experience VS. Attitude
Often times you come across a dedicated and enthusiastic candidate who you see fitting right in, yet, they might be lacking in experience. Trust your gut in this instance and consider offering them the training they need

Resume Check!
This is a very important step to follow. Unfortunately, some people tend to exaggerate their qualifications and work experiences on their resume. Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and confirm with their previous employers to make sure they’ve actually worked the dates they’ve stated. Keep in mind however, that sometimes people have certain reasons for abruptly leaving their previous job. If the candidate seems like a great fit, give them the benefit of the doubt and ask them personally.

These tips don’t guarantee you’ll find your perfect employee; however, it’s a great guide to being one step closer. You can advertise the job position in newspapers and online on websites like Monster and CareerBuilder. Since the perfect employee won’t come to you, try searching social networking sites like, LinkedIn. These sites can be a useful resource to help you find great candidates who are not even actively searching for a job. Last but not least, if you’d like help recruiting and screening, staffing agencies are another excellent means of recruiting.
