The Great Shift: Where Have All the Workers Gone?

America’s labor force participation rate (LFPR) is at a low not seen since the 1970s. Even as the unemployment rate has steadily decreased from a high of 10% in October of 2009 to 7.4% in July of 2013, the percentage of Americans in the labor force has fallen about 2.7 percentage points since the onset of the latest recession.
