5 Things to Do This Month: April 2014

Spring has finally arrived – hopefully. After what seemed like a never-ending winter for most of North America, the next several weeks will be a welcome breath of fresh, springtime air. As we enter into the month of April, keep these five things to do in mind.

Stress Awareness Month

According to a study by Harris Interactive for Everest College, 83% of workers said they felt stress about their jobs in 2013, which was up from 73% the previous year. This month, discuss the causes and potential adverse effects of work stress with your employees and how it can often carry over to other parts of their lives. There are a variety of resources readily available online or you could even tap into local health organizations to help teach your team how to deal with stress before it becomes a problem.

National High Five Day (April 17)

If there’s a better way than a good old fashioned high five to say “keep up the good work,” we haven’t heard it. April 17 is National High Five Day and is set aside as a day to tell a friend, co-worker, family member, or even a stranger on the street that they are doing a great job. Nothing builds morale like a little positive reinforcement, so whether it’s up high or down low, take a moment to let your employees know you appreciate their hard work and dedication.

Administrative Professionals Day (April 23)

Don’t forget that April 23 is Administrative Professional’s Day. Your support team keeps the office running like a well-oiled machine, so show your appreciation for their hard work and dedication with a simple gesture like bringing in a small gift, taking them to lunch, or even giving them a free day off.

Plan an Office Outing

Barring a few April showers, set aside a day this month to plan a company outing. The winter weather is mostly behind us, and it’s time to get out and enjoy the milder spring temperatures. From office picnics to attending a baseball game, there are many opportunities to spend a little quality time outdoors with your employees.

Honesty Day (April 30)

Since we open the month with April Fool’s Day, a holiday based entirely on telling a few little white lies, it only seems fitting to end the month on a repentant note with National Honesty Day. Reaffirm your commitment to your employees to be open and honest about the company and let them know your door is always open if they ever feel their integrity is tested in their daily activities.
