5 Things to Do This Month: August 2014

How is it already August? Do you realize we’re now closer to 2015 than we are to 2013? As unsettling as that fact may be for many people, don’t let it stress you out because there’s still plenty of time left to buckle down and meet your 2014 goals. In the meantime, check out these five things to do this month.

Hit the Links for National Golf Month
The specific origins of the game of golf are fuzzy, but its appeal as a way to spend a summer afternoon is crystal clear to millions of “duffers” around the world. Pick a day this month to organize a company golf outing. Not only will spending some time away from the office help energize your employees, but a little friendly competition can do wonders for morale.

Offer Forgiveness
Mahatma Gandhi said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” Sunday, Aug. 3, is International Forgiveness Day – a day dedicated to casting away old grudges and moving on in a more positive light. If you’re struggling with a contentious relationship with a co-worker or someone in your personal life, take a moment to reevaluate the situation, decide whether it’s even worth the heart ache anymore to be mad, and start taking steps to forgive and forget.

Beat the Heat
We’re in the middle of summer and, as if you haven’t already noticed, it’s heating up outside. Heat-related illnesses occur when our bodies are unable to cool down to a safe temperature. It’s a dangerous condition and one that affects many workers every year. So, it’s important to keep a close watch on your workers and to know the signs of heat stress. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides a handy “Quick Card” with information on symptoms, treatment, and prevention of heat related illness.

Read a Book
One way to beat the heat is to crank up the AC and find a comfortable spot to enjoy a great summer read. Saturday, Aug. 9 is Book Lover’s day, so take a trip to your local library, download a new title to your favorite eReader, or check out Amazon.com’s recommended summer reading list and prepare to spend some quality time getting lost in a pile of books.

Get Back to School
With the beginning of August comes the final countdown to back to school for children everywhere – and for many of their parents, an exhausted sigh of relief. Be prepared for some shuffling of schedules as your employees and co-workers adjust their morning routines to get back into the swing of carpooling their kids to school, dropping off forgotten homework, and the occasional sick day.
