The Results Are In: Are Your Company’s Benefits Skewed?

In September, we asked our readers if their companies’ benefits are skewed toward a specific demographic within their workplace, and with 73% of the votes, the vast majority said their benefits are fairly distributed. Approximately 10% believe parents receive the most benefit. “Men” and “single people” received 5% of the votes each, and “women” received 2%.

Another 5% of respondents selected the other option and submitted their own thoughts on the questions, including:

  • Union members receive more benefits than non-union member positions
  • Younger people receive the most benefit
  • I think salaried people make far better benefits than hourly support staff
  • Yes, but not to one group or another, more to changing life issues.

In a job seeker’s market, employee benefits are more important than ever.
Opportunities abound for skilled workers and in many job markets, the pool of applicants with the right mix of experience and expertise is drying up. One way companies can differentiate themselves from the competition to recruit top talent is to be more creative with the benefits they offer. Because the most qualified candidates have more freedom to be selective about which jobs they accept, benefits can play an important role in helping them make a decision.

On Movin’ On Up, Express Employment Professionals’ blog for job seekers and people early in their career, readers were asked, “What benefits—not including health—do you value most from employers?” And according to the results, “a flexible work schedule” led the pack with 18% of the votes, followed by “generous/unlimited vacation time” and “opportunities to work from home/remotely” at 13% and 12% respectively. Other top answers included:

  • Access to training/certification
  • Casual dress code
  • Profit sharing/stock options
  • College tuition reimbursement
  • Opportunities to work from home/remotely

So, evaluating and realigning benefits programs to focus on the perks today’s generation of workers expect from their employer is a key strategy companies can implement to maintain their competitive edge and not only attract new skilled workers, but also retain the top talent they already have in their workplaces.
