Remote work has experienced an exponential rise over the past few years, but has become especially prevalent during with many businesses opting to use a hybrid workforce this past year to adhere to restrictions and social distancing mandates. With the shift away from brick and mortar offices, there is bound to be an impact on hours worked with employees.
In a recent Refresh Leadership poll, we asked our readers if they work more or less when working from home. And with 83%, our respondents overwhelming said they work at least the same amount of hours if not more when doing their job remotely. Broken down, 58% said they work more hours, while 25% said there is no change in the amount of hours they log at home compared to the office. Only 17% of workers said they work less hours when home.
As a follow-up question, we asked respondents how many more or less hours they work remotely, and the results ranged anywhere from one to 10 extra hours a week. There were also some interesting responses in regard to increased productivity when working from home. According to one respondent, “It’s more like more work done in the same time with less distractions … less stress.”
Higher Productivity in Remote Work
Since many workers were forced into remote work during 2020, many businesses have experienced increases in productivity levels, signifying higher engagement levels with a remote or hybrid workforce. According to a recent study by PwC, 52% of companies say their workforce is more productive while working remotely, with 83% of employers saying the switch to remote work has been successful.
