5 Things to Do This Month: September 2011

PRD11RL_5THINGS_FThis September holds a variety of opportunities to boost morale and increase productivity in your workplace while having fun at the same time. Check out these five things to incorporate into your month!

Kickoff the Start of Football Season
Whether you prefer college or professional, football can be a great source of comradery or friendly rivalry in the office. Consider holding a lunchtime tailgate party for your employees – the food could be as simple as a potluck of chili, hotdogs, and chips. If there’s a big rivalry in your office, try applying it to a good cause. In the name of their respective teams, each side could compete by bringing canned foods to be donated to a local charity.

Honor Your Temporary and Contract Employees
September 12 – 16 is National Staffing Employee Week in the U.S. This is the perfect time to thank all the workers at your business who are employed by your local staffing firms and to recognize the contributions they make to the nation’s workforce and economy every day. Over the course of the last few years as the economy has continued to change, staffing employees have played a significant part in the recovery with over 400,000 jobs created and 2.6 million workers employed on an average business day in 2010. So, let your temporary workers know you appreciate them!

Enjoy the First Day of Autumn
Take Friday, Sept. 23, to celebrate the end of summer and the first day of the fall season. By this point, hopefully the summer heat wave will have broken and you can enjoy some cooler temperatures. Since it’s the end of the workweek, this would be a great opportunity to take your team on an outdoor team-building activity, such as a kickball game at the park or a tour of the local zoo.

Celebrate Ask a Stupid Question Day
The adage that “there’s no such thing as a stupid question” isn’t quite true. However, on Sept. 28, in honor of Ask a Stupid Question Day, encourage your team to step out on a limb and ask some stupid questions. Sometimes those off-the-wall questions are really just someone questioning the status quo, and you never know what revolutionary new process you might uncover or what old program could be deemed unnecessary!

Gear up for Fourth Quarter
Depending on your industry and business, the fourth quarter might be your busiest or slowest time of year. But, whichever it may be, now is the time to plan ahead and prepare for the last three months of 2011. Hold a planning session with your team to review upcoming projects, confirm deadlines, forecast the quarter’s workload, and consider your staffing requirements.
