5 Things to Do This Month: October 2011

87798602October can be a busy month as it kicks off the fourth, and final, quarter of 2011. But, before the holiday season revs up, make sure you take the time to do these five things to help improve performance and keep employee engagement high through the end of the year.

Support the Pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is a great time to have a team-building activity that also benefits your local community. Since one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, chances are someone you or your team members know have felt the disease’s effects. Most cities hold a Race for the Cure, so consider gathering a team to run or walk, or even look into the volunteer opportunities at the event.

Recognize Your Business’s Leaders
National Boss Day is Oct. 16, and it’s a great chance for your business to honor all the managers who provide their leadership each day. Consider doing something special, like bringing in breakfast or lunch for the day. And, make sure you take this opportunity to highlight the specific qualities that make these leaders successful so other employees know what to aspire to.

Schedule Performance Reviews
If you’re one of the many companies that hold employee performance reviews in the fourth quarter, make sure you get them scheduled now. Between projects and upcoming holidays, employees’ calendars can fill up fast. Plus, you want to allow yourself and your employees plenty of time to prepare for the evaluation so you both receive the maximum benefits from the yearly review.

Plan Your Company’s Holiday Celebration
If you haven’t already, you need to plan and schedule your company’s holiday party. Many top vendors book up quickly, so don’t delay in picking a date and reserving the location for your celebration. There are only a few weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and most people have to be picky on what events they choose to attend.

Have Some Halloween Fun
October 31 doesn’t just have to be fun for the kids. Hold a decorating and costume contest between employees or departments. Consider having a pizza party for lunch, and then inviting employees’ children to trick or treat later in the afternoon. Your workers will appreciate this family-friendly celebration, and most customers will appreciate your business’s creativity.
